Kindred Hospital the Palm Beaches Opens Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit

The 11-bed unit, located within the hospital, provides intensive rehabilitation therapy to advance patients’ recovery from injury or illness.

RIVIERA BEACH, FL (August 24, 2023) – Kindred Hospital The Palm Beaches today held a ribbon cutting to open its new rehabilitation unit located inside the specialty hospital. The acute rehabilitation unit (ARU) helps adults who have experienced a loss of function or disability due to injury or illness.

The 11-bed ARU features all-private rooms for patients recovering from conditions that include stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopedic injury, neurological conditions, amputation, respiratory and pulmonary illness, and trauma. The new unit provides the intensive, interdisciplinary clinical and rehabilitation services necessary for improved function and independence, facilitating patients’ recovery so they can be discharged and return to their homes.

“First and foremost, this ARU adds essential inpatient rehabilitation services to an area with significant need,” said Jerry Creighton, COO and CCO of Kindred Hospital The Palm Beaches. “This complementary service helps our patients and those referred to our ARU recover and, ideally, return home with the strength and ability to live more independently. It gives our hospital the ability to provide a broader range of acute-level, physician-led rehabilitation care while avoiding the disruption of transferring a patient to a separate facility. Patients who proceed through this continuum of care are more likely to recover sooner. We believe we can deliver better outcomes with these enhanced capabilities, expertise, and clinical integration, all under one roof.”

The ARU features large interdisciplinary gyms, designated rooms for dining and activities, outdoor areas that allow patients to practice ambulating or meet with family and friends, and specialty programs dedicated to neuro, stroke, brain injury, and amputation.

“Adding dedicated acute-level rehabilitation units in our hospital is the kind of innovation that differentiates our Specialty Hospitals from other providers,” said Daniel Brywczynski, President of ScionHealth’s Specialty Hospital Division. “While all of our 76 long-term acute care hospitals combine rehabilitation services in the care of their patients, we continue to integrate separate rehabilitation units into facilities such as Kindred Hospital The Palm Beaches because of the added benefit the more specialized care of an ARU can offer many individuals recovering from a critical illness or injury.”

At the Kindred Hospital The Palm Beaches ARU, an interdisciplinary team that includes physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and other health professionals designs a treatment plan to help a patient restore lost ability and function. Intensive monitoring and therapy help these patients regain skills more quickly in a safe, controlled environment. The goal is to support patients while they recover, so they can return home and resume normal activities.

ARU patients receive a minimum of three hours of therapy each day for at least five days a week under the direction of a physiatrist, a doctor specialized in rehabilitation and physical medicine, and 24/7 nursing care. Services include physical, occupational, and speech therapy; physiatry, internal medicine, and medical/surgical consultations; rehabilitation nursing; nutritional services; and a dedicated pharmacy. The rehabilitation unit is available to Kindred Hospital The Palm Beaches patients as well as patients from other healthcare providers in the community.
