Kindred Hospital Paramount Opens New Acute Rehabilitation Unit

The 18-bed unit, located within the hospital, provides intensive rehabilitation therapy to advance patients’ recovery from injury or illness.

PARAMOUNT, CA (August 17, 2023) – Kindred Hospital Paramount held a ribbon-cutting event yesterday evening to ceremoniously open a new rehabilitation unit located inside the specialty hospital. The acute rehabilitation unit (ARU) helps adults who have experienced a loss of function or disability due to injury or illness.

The 18-bed ARU features semi-private rooms for patients recovering from conditions that include stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopedic injury, neurological conditions, amputation, respiratory and pulmonary illness, and trauma. The new unit provides the intensive, interdisciplinary clinical and rehabilitation services necessary for improved function and independence, facilitating patients’ recovery so they can be discharged and return to their homes.

“We are thrilled to add this inpatient rehabilitation unit to our hospital to advance our efforts to help patients recover and, ideally, return home with the strength and ability to live more independently,” said Mark Apodaca, Market CEO of Kindred Hospitals in the South Bay area. “This new service allows Kindred Hospital Paramount to provide a broader range of acute-level, physician-led rehabilitation care while avoiding the disruption of transferring a patient to a separate facility. By combining these enhanced capabilities and clinical integration under one roof, we believe we can deliver a continuum of care and better outcomes for the clinically complex patients already in our hospital and expand access to rehabilitative services to those in the community who require comprehensive care to recover from injury or illness.”

The ARU features a large interdisciplinary gym, designated rooms for dining and activities, and an “activity of daily living” space designed to simulate a residential environment that allows patients to practice ambulation while participating in daily activities, such as cooking, in order to safely reintegrate back into the community. It also offers specialty rehabilitation programs dedicated to neuro, stroke, brain injury, and amputation.

“Integrating dedicated, acute-level rehabilitation units in our hospitals sets our Specialty Hospitals division apart, and this new ARU at Kindred Hospital Paramount further elevates the hospital’s value to the community,” said Daniel Brywczynski, President of ScionHealth’s Specialty Hospital Division. “The market gains much-needed inpatient rehabilitation services, and the hospital gains a standalone unit that in our experience has proven to be especially beneficial to patients recovering from a critical illness or injury.”

At the Kindred Hospital Paramount ARU, an interdisciplinary team that includes physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and other health professionals designs a treatment plan to help a patient restore lost ability and function. Intensive monitoring and therapy help these patients regain skills more quickly in a safe, controlled environment. The goal is to support patients while they recover, so they can return home and resume normal activities.

ARU patients receive a minimum of three hours of therapy each day for at least five days a week under the direction of a physiatrist, a doctor specialized in rehabilitation and physical medicine, and 24/7 nursing care. Services include physical, occupational, and speech therapy; physiatry, internal medicine, and medical/surgical consultations; rehabilitation nursing; nutritional services; and a dedicated pharmacy. The rehabilitation unit is available to Kindred Hospital Paramount patients as well as patients from other healthcare providers in the community.

The new ARU is managed and staffed by Lifepoint Rehabilitation, a business unit of Lifepoint Health. Lifepoint Rehabilitation is a trusted operator of more than 40 inpatient rehabilitation hospitals and 250 hospital-based rehabilitation units, medical/surgical and outpatient therapy settings nationwide.
