Kindred Hospital Dayton Opens Comprehensive Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit

The new 46-bed unit will meet community’s needs for support, therapy and psychiatric care for patients in times of crisis, including those struggling with severe depression and substance use disorders

DAYTON, Ohio (Aug. 22, 2023) – Kindred Hospital Dayton today unveiled a new 46-bed inpatient behavioral health unit that will help provide psychiatric care and therapy to adults in Dayton and surrounding communities who are suffering from mental health and substance use disorders, including during times of crisis.

Kindred Hospital Dayton’s new BHU is set to begin accepting patients in September, with a team of psychiatrists and specially trained nurses and therapists providing around-the-clock support, treatment and medication management. The BHU is designed to serve patients struggling with severe depression, thoughts or actions of self-harm, substance use disorders, severe mood disorders, acute psychotic disorders, and behaviorally disruptive disorders.

“We are proud to expand our building with this modern, thoughtfully designed inpatient behavioral health unit that will help meet a critical need for high-quality, compassionate behavioral health services for those in our community who are struggling the most,” said Sue Krinke, Market CEO for Kindred Hospitals of Dayton and Lima. “In our care model, our skilled team will guide and support our patients through their initial crisis phase while helping stabilize their symptoms. We then utilize a range of daily therapy services that consider the whole person, helping place patients on a path to recovery, healing and management of day-to-day living. It’s an honor for Kindred Hospital Dayton to provide these resources to the community.”

The BHU offers 24-hour psychiatric treatment and crisis support for mental health issues with medical physician oversight. It will provide medication management, individual therapy, group counseling and discharge planning.

The new BHU is the largest to be constructed at any of the nation’s 60 Kindred Hospitals and completes a major expansion and renovation for the Dayton hospital, which now has 97 patient rooms in all, including 51 devoted to long-term acute medical care. It’s expected that medically compromised behavioral health patients, particularly those who are seniors, will benefit from the physical, occupational and speech therapy resources that are available on-site at the long-term acute care hospital. About two-thirds of the BHU rooms are designated for adults ages 18-64, with the rest dedicated for those 65 and over.

“This new behavioral health unit demonstrates an investment by Kindred Hospital Dayton in the mental healthcare and well-being of its community,” said Daniel Brywczynski, President of the Specialty Hospital Division of ScionHealth, which is the parent company of Kindred Hospitals. “For years, Kindred Hospital Dayton has been a leader in its market in helping patients recover from serious, complex illnesses and injuries. In launching this new BHU, which accounts for nearly half of the hospital’s total beds, ScionHealth and Kindred Hospital Dayton continue to lead and grow with a focus on empowering caregivers and helping patients.”
