ScionHealth Endorses Research Report Demonstrating Value of Long-Term Acute Care Hospitals in Alternative Payment Models

Louisville, KY – (February 23, 2022) – ScionHealth, a new healthcare system focused on high-quality acute and post-acute hospital solutions, commented on the release of “Long-Term Acute Care (LTAC) Hospitals as Part of the Value-Based Solution: A Case Study of Kindred LTAC Hospitals in Las Vegas,” a report and analysis by ATI Advisory and CedarGate Technologies.

Launched in December 2021, ScionHealth consists of 79 hospital campuses in 25 states – including 61 LTAC hospitals previously owned by Kindred, which continue to operate under the Kindred Hospital name.

Rob Jay, ScionHealth’s Chief Executive Officer, said, “The release of ATI Advisory and CedarGate Technologies analysis demonstrates the strong financial and clinical value that LTAC hospitals can bring to value-based payment models as they provide care solutions for the nation’s most medically complex patients.”

According to the case study: “The Cedar Gate and ATI analyses demonstrate that Kindred LTAC hospitals can meaningfully participate and contribute to success in value-based care models, and that a continued and expanded role exists for them in providing cost-effective care to and appropriately managing clinically complex patients in these models.”

Specifically, the report noted: “As evident through the experience of Kindred LTAC hospitals in Las Vegas and their participation in the Silver State Accountable Care Organization (ACO), LTAC hospitals can meaningfully participate and contribute to success in value-based models, such as ACOs and managed care payer networks, by providing high-quality care for some of the most clinically complex cases.”

Mike Warrington, President of ScionHealth’s Long-Term Acute Care division noted, “I am proud of our clinical teams’ ability to deliver the high-quality interdisciplinary care for the most complex patients that resulted in reduced rehospitalizations and readmission spending as compared to other providers, including skilled nursing facilities, as demonstrated within this report.”
